Sleep Battles or “I AM NOT TIRED!”

Ivan has been a pretty good napper for awhile, but in the last couple months as he perhaps transitions out of needing a nap every day the battles have begun. He stubbornly insists he is not tired, but his behavior and eyelids indicate otherwise.

After insisting he was not tired and refusing to nap, Ivan finally falls asleep while in the process of looking for a dropped binky under his bed.

After being put back into bed about 6 times, Ivan falls asleep with his hand reaching under the bedroom door.

Ivan is working on potty training and we are getting him away from his binky (pacifier). He’s doing a lot of growing up and I guess not going to nap easily is just part of that. But, oof! somedays are rough.

Ivan Speaks

animalheads
Photo of the kids after attending a showing of Despicable Me 2. They took favorite stuffed animals to snuggle in case there were scary parts in the movie. Then they took the animals on a walk and put them on their heads as one does.

Some more quotes from talking with my son:

What does Ivan think it means to be a grown-up?
“When I’m grown-up I will open doors with keys. I will wear glasses.”

“There’s an ant in the house. I call him Annie.” After it rains there have been a lot of ants entering the house. They are called Annie and Ivan loves each one. We are less pleased.

“Daddy, you and I are twins. We have the same head!”

Birth of a new superhero whom we will call Binky Blaster.
i (pointing his pacifier at me menacingly across the breakfast table): This shoots fire. FOOSH!
A: Your binky shoots fire?
i: Yeah, FOOSH!, there is fire on your hand. FOOSH! There is fire all over you. The milk is raining it off of you.
A: Thank goodness for the milk.
i: Yeah, milk is good.

Breakfast time and Ivan is hungry.
i: CEREAL! CEREAL!
A: Is that nice asking?
i: May I have some cereal, please?
A: Yes.
(As I get out the cereal) i: CEREAL! CEREAL! I want CEREAL!
A: Have some patience.
i: I already had a patience. I want cereal.

For those who may not know Eggy and Owie are the names Ivan has given to his feet.
“Owie and Eggy are playing baseball in the grass. Kick! Kick!”

Garage Sale Season

batcave

I was working on decluttering, but a neighborhood toy sale has undone my hard work. Ivan got to pick something. He chose the BATCAVE. He actually couldn’t decide between the batcave and what he called “a family of cars” (mama car, daddy monster truck, baby motorcycle). For $6 total, I let him have both. He is uber pleased.

He was fully engrossed in giving rides to superheroes in the Batcave’s elevator. For a long time he has been all about elevators. He took his first solo ride in one at under 2 and a half when he jetted past some grown-ups into an open elevator after Spanish class. I met up with him in the lobby as he was already trained to push the lobby button from previous rides.

Kiwi Camp

“Kiwi Camp” is where Ivan believes he is going for a first day camp experience. It is, in fact, called Peewee Camp. I think the alliteration of his sister’s Camp Kindergarten has him confused.

After being entirely surly about getting out of the house and getting going, Ivan discovers that his hour long day camp is, in fact, fun. This is due in large part to the corner filled with trucks and a plastic garage. I am proud to see him so content staying at camp with a new teacher while Ezri and I left.

Ivan with a popsicle – Like camp, popsicles are one of the wonders of summer!

Oh, and watermelon is also a summer wonder.

Grovefest

With his big sister away at Camp Kindergarten for the day, Ivan and I baked banana bread in the morning and then did Grovefest together.

The shirt sums up how he feels about his balloon, french fries, and lemonade. Another balanced festival food meal.

Here he is “zooming.”

This is on the carousel. He decided he preferred the bench to a ride on one of the ponies.

He “won” a blue lemur toy in a carnival game with water squirters that you aimed at a target to race monkeys. But, he was only playing against me so a small victory.

He bravely slid down the enormous slide that he was only just tall enough to ride.

Meeting Rhea

Ivan really enjoyed playing fetch with Rhea who belongs to good friends of ours.
Rhea enjoyed it too.

I loved that she learned how far to go out based on who had the ball. She’d start running pretty long if I had it. If Ezri had it she did a slow jog away and if Ivan had the ball she just went back a couple paces and jumped high for it. Ivan tends to launch a ball in a high short arc.

Ivan also got to meet the baby of household.
violet

He liked the baby who he described as “so cute,” but the dog and the high stools he could climb were his favorite parts of the visit.

Ivan speaks

dometime

Another collection of what Ivan has said.

Eric assembled the backyard play dome while Ivan was napping. Upon coming out and seeing it and doing a bit of climbing he said, “Thank you, Daddy, for this dome.” Unprompted politeness and genuine gratitude are the cutest.

While pointing at the zookeeper’s house in the book Goodnight, Gorilla Ivan said, “That’s the dear house.” As each animal’s cage is shown, the reader says goodnight to that animal. “Goodnight, Elephant.” “Goodnight, Armadillo.” In the zookeeper’s house, his wife says, “Goodnight, Dear.” Logic tells Ivan that this makes the house “The Dear House.” I spent too long thinking, “But, Ivan, there are no deer in this story,” before I caught up with Ivan’s logic.

“No, I want REAL yogurt.” Ivan has started calling the-thing-he-wants the “real” one. So, I’ve offered him a real yogurt not his preferred kind or a real shirt but not the Spider-man one or real shoes but not the green ones. He will push them away demanding the “real” one.

“When I get big and am a grown-up, I will eat spicy things.”

Ivan started pulling random condiments out of the fridge. When told he was not allowed and should stop, he pointed at Grandma Tam and said, “She started it.” While true that Tam had taken sandwich fixings for lunch from the fridge, Ivan had missed that she was not playing a fun new game.

Siblings:
e: I want to be alone!
i: How about stop being grumpy, Ezri?
e: ROAR!
i: AHHHHHHHHHHHH! (giggles)

Parent quotes that made sense in context:
“Ivan, your sister is NOT a cow trampoline.”
“There is no TA-DA! in naptime.”

Dynamic Duos

Ivan has gotten very into imaginative play based on favorite videos and books.
I have used his desires to motivate him to leave the house. Ivan would not leave home to get his sister. However, Linny would put on his shoes and get in the Flyboat (car) because the Wonderpets need to go to preschool to pick-up Ming Ming (Ezri) and rescue a baby frog.

He often corrects his grown-ups when they mistakenly call him Ivan. It goes like this.
A; Let’s go, Ivan.
i: You mean Spider-man.
A: Right, let’s go, Spider-man.
