Ivan really likes dinosaurs
Ivan Speaks
i (apropos of nothing): Very very happy.
A: What makes you very happy?
i: YOU! You, Amanda.
Ivan has named his feet Eggy(left) and Owie(right).
We hear him talking to them after he goes to bed. Sometimes chanting “Eggy! Owie! Eggy! Owie!” I am guessing he is kicking his feet in the air in these moments but cannot say for certain.
One lunchtime he was beginning to put a foot on the table and I gave him a warning look. He said, “No, Eggy. You get down!” as if Eggy were acting without permission.
There are also times when Ivan steadfastly refuses to put on boots, but if you nicely ask Eggy and Owie if they want to get it in the boots they are happy to do so. Whatever gets us out the door in time.
A: What happened at Jenny’s today?
i: I played Miguel.
A: What else happened?
i: My big sister happened.
(Ezri arrives from preschool in the middle of his stay at Jenny’s for childcare.)
For a time Ivan was emitting a high pitched noise before getting his words out. Now he stutters the word “some.” In his Spanish class this means interactions with his teacher go like this:
Elizabeth: Yo quiero
i: some-some yo quiero
Elizabeth: agua
i: some-some aqua
(glass of water is passed)
i: some gracias
Since the agua in Spanish class comes from a plastic pitcher in other contexts where Ivan sees a plastic pitcher he points at it and smiles saying “AGUA!”

Sleepy Ivan
Amazing! We took crayons and made them into crayons.
For morning craft, I decided we’d melt our broken crayons into new shapes.
Ivan was dedicated to removing the paper from the crayons. It was time-consuming and soon bored his sister, but Ivan happily used his nails to remove the paper and every time I asked if he wanted another crayon to peel he said, “yeah!” Ivan’s “yeah” has developed into a two syllable word in recent weeks, so an enthusiastic “ye-ah!” He spent half an hour completely engrossed in crayon peeling.
Ezri enjoyed color sorting and finding the broken crayons in our crayon tin. I was in charge of crushing crayons and filling molds. The penguin mold I thought was silicone turned out to be another kind of rubber and went melty in the oven. So, we got no penguin shaped crayons. But, we made a muffin shaped large circle, long sticks and Han-Solo-encased-in-carbonite crayons.
Dino Puzzle
Ivan is getting pretty good at helping put together puzzles.
This Dinosaur Puzzle is a recent favorite. He likes to “ROAR” as he works on this one. He says, “I did it!” and raises his arm in triumph whenever he gets a piece in. So, puzzles are not a quiet activity for Ivan.
Here he’s at work and roaring.

Here he is posing with his completed effort.

He likes breaking the puzzle apart, so it didn’t last long on the floor before we’d broken it back into pieces.

Pick me up!
It’s hard to say no when he attaches to my leg looks up and says, “Pick me up, PLEASE!”
As Ivan’s speech improves I miss some of his mispronunciations.
This holiday season his requests for “fwudge” where pretty cute, but he’s learned to ask for fudge.
When his boots weren’t on quite right he’d stand and describe himself as “lobbily.” Now he can say wobbly, but I sometimes still use lobbily.
