Ivan’s first ambulance ride

The day after Thanksgiving we gave Ivan one cashew. He got small bumps around his mouth and was then fine.

Three hours later unable to nap he started to have hives on his face, then his arms and then his legs. We took him to an Urgent Care. He turned more red by the minute. The doctor there had an i.v. put in and pushed benadryl into him. The doctor called us an ambulance in case the reaction got worse he thought it best for Ivan to be at the hospital.

I got to lie on the gurney with Ivan in my lap wailing, red and puffy. The paramedics were great telling me how nice it was to hear Ivan wailing and know his airways were clear. Ivan wailed that he wanted his shirt on and that he wanted his shoes. Ivan did a good job considering and turned rapidly less red as the benadryl set in. The paramedic monitoring his vitals asked if he knew how to high five and held his hand up. Ivan stuck out his lower lip, stopped wailing and looked at the paramedic skeptically. Then he slowly raised his open hand and touched the paramedic’s extended hand. That was when I really knew he was doing okay. After that the drowsy factor of medication set in and he fell asleep on my chest for the rest of the way to the hospital.

Ezri was a great big sister. When they put the i.v. in, she held Ivan’s hand and talked to him from the other side of the bed while the parents held him down. She showed him how to stick out his tongue for the exam and was a good calming force in the room. She did point out as he was covered in hives that she had an itchy spot near her elbow that perhaps needed urgent care as well. When Ivan awoke in the E.R. his first question after crying was, “Where Every?” (how he says Ezri) Followed by, “Where Daddy?”

Here he is with “Woof Woo” his new dog given to him by the paramedics in the ambulance and clearly named after Ezri’s dog named Woof Woof. Woof Woo was his 3rd night of Hanukkah lagniappe.

He’s doing well now. Though we will have to see a doctor and an allergist and he will never know the wonder of a good cashew cookie.

Face First

ivanglasses

This past Monday Ivan fell face first onto a hard floor and loosened three teeth. There was a brief moment of silence before the horrible wail which was followed by sobs and then cries of “Tooth, tooth, tooth fall out!” They did not fall out, but did move. After a visit to the doctor and the dentist, we found out there’s not much to do for loose baby teeth, but see how they heal. He’s eating his normal food again with more crooked front teeth. It was pretty pathetic when his comfort item of sucking on his pacifier didn’t work cause his mouth hurt too much. Ivan did a great job at both doc and dentist though he did command the doctor to “fix it” when he pointed to his teeth.

Ivan speaks

These days Ivan’s language is understood pretty well by complete strangers not used to his speech which is pretty cool.

Sometimes, perhaps more often than I thought, I tell Ivan he is a funny little booger.  He’s adopted the phrase and will point at me and say, “You’re a funny little booger.”  At the diaper changing table both Eric and I have been turned away and told by Ivan, “Go away, funny little booger.”  Now he’s decided, “Manda, you’re a funny big booger.”  At least he also tells me that I’m the best.

Discussing the holidays:
A: What do you want for Hanukkah?
i: I’m a dinosaur.
A: You want a dinosaur?
E: I think he’s thinking Halloween.
i:  ROAR!  I’m a dinosaur.

Ivan is also a big fan of saying, “Eeny, Meeny, Miney Mo Catch a tiger by the toe. If he hollers let him go.  Eeny Meeny, Miney. . ” and then he points at you and yells “MO!”  Ezri taught him the rhyme and they do it together.

He says, “I do it,” so often that in the tot Spanish class his teacher has taught him to say, “Yo lo hago.”

Standing in a muddy puddle with a friend. Ivan called the puddles “cuddles.” He also talked about how lobilly he was before he got his boots on straight. “Lobbily” is wobbly.

Window painting in Downtown DG

When I moved here over a decade ago, I was charmed by the Halloween tradition of having kids paint the windows of downtown with their own designs. This was the first year I thought my kids were old enough.
Ezri made a pumpkin patch with a pumpkin for each member of her family. Ivan painted a lot of white and showed me where to add eyes for ghosts.
