Ezri is looking at a guidebook to My Little Ponies. Ivan is pointing out Spike the Dragon with an energetic exclamation of “Dragon!” whenever he occurs. Ivan also likes to point out Pinkie Pie by saying her name.

Reading with Grandpa Harvey
What is Ivan Reading?
Here he’s enjoying a Babybug Magazine. He crawled out the futon first thing in the morning, hopped up, and opened up his magazine to read.
Ivan will not let me put the books Night, Night, Elmo! or Baa, Baa, Black Sheep by Melissa Everett in the bag to return to the library. I went ahead and placed an amazon order for these two titles because the love of them is not waning.
Night, Night, Elmo has simple flaps and a great ending pop-up where you can turn down a flap to tuck Elmo into his bed.
Baa Baa Black Sheep goes through singing about sheep in all the colors of the rainbow and the whacky things you can make out of their wool. The red sheep’s wool makes a lobster. The yellow sheep’s wool makes a school bus. It’s ridiculous and goes to Ivan’s favorite tune.
We are returning two great hits to the library.
Maisy’s Train by Lucy Cousins which features a page where the train goes down the hill and you say, “Wheee!” that Ivan adores.
and
Say and Play Oink Moo Meow which has photos of about twenty different animals all making their sounds which is perfect for Ivan’s desire to point and make animal noises. I enjoyed that it has some less standard animals like a dove that says “coo coo” and the sea lion saying “art art.” Eric had a moment when pointing at the pig and asking what noise it made, Ivan said “wee wee wee” because he remember playing this little piggy on his toes and the pig going “wee wee wee” all the way home.
Ivan in his bowl hat.
Ivan loves his Maisy books by Lucy Cousins. Other current book faves include Star Wars ABC, Star Wars 123, a book called simply Nursery Rhymes from Priddy Books, Moo Moo Goes to the City by Jo Lodge, Sandra Boynton’s books especially Hey! Wake Up! and a number of board books featuring Sesame Street muppets.
Here is Ivan reading Maisy wearing a felt bowl that belongs in the play kitchen on his head.
Ivan’s not the only one to discover the bowl’s hat-like qualities. Here’s a friend at our holiday party rocking the look.
Also, while this photo is not the best in terms of focus, I love the spirit of the duo in this one chilling together with hats on their heads.
Relaxing with a good book
Ivan especially likes fuzzy books and crinkly books and books with teething plastics attached.
He is a fan of this small barnyard animal cloth book, but also likes Baby Faces Peekaboo! by DK and he loves to pet the bunny ears of Hoppity Hop Peekaboo! also by DK.
He is beginning to focus on photos especially those of babies or faces, drawn illustrations are not yet interesting. Mostly he is still all about textures in his books. He really enjoys being read to by his big sister, especially if she reads a book with animal noises in it.
The One and Only Ivan
I found the perfect book to read aloud to Ivan. It is the new novel by Katherine Applegate titled The One and Only Ivan. It is about protecting the young. It is about true friends and what it means to be human. The story shows that humans can be wonderful, but they can also be terribly callous. It is about a gorilla named Ivan.
After many years as a sideshow act in part of an open-air mall, Ivan decides that while he had accepted his limited domain things need to change for Ruby who is a baby elephant new to the show. That feeling that the world needs to be better for the young resonated with me as I read this aloud to my infant son. With the help of a young girl named Julia, Ivan uses his talents to change the world for Ruby. He finds a way to be the protector – the silverback – he was meant to be. I hope I can be the protector my one and only Ivan needs as he grows up.
This would be a special novel whether I read it now or at another time, but it was the perfect novel to read to my Ivan while his sister napped and late at night while he was nursing. Applegate captures both great friendships and great heartaches with language that has been parred down. The novel is narrated by Ivan in the first person or first gorilla I suppose. Ivan mixes poignant moments with hilarious observations. When Ruby started asking Ivan questions, I looked at my three-year-old daughter and thought this author has perfectly captured never-ending child chatter.
I am going to quote the first chapter which is called “hello” in its entirety. “I am Ivan. I am a gorilla. It’s not as easy as it looks.” That’s our gorilla narrator. Doesn’t he make you want to read more of his story?
I think perhaps Ivan has gone a little too far towards the chimp end of great ape family and away from the gorilla end in this next photo. Not sure the Ivan from the novel would approve.
I was lucky enough to meet the author. So, Ivan, before you drool on that know that it is a signed copy. Ivan and I recommend you read this book. If you get the chance to read it aloud to a young person, it is even more of a joy. It’s best audience is probably 3rd grade and up. I mean the “and up.” I don’t think anyone is too old to enjoy this book. Don’t worry, Ivan, we can it read it together again when you’re older.
